13 June 2018, this blog is about writing in scenes. I’m focusing on the tools to build scenes. I’ll leave up the parts of a novel because I think this is an important picture for any novelist. I’m writing about how to begin and write a novel.
- The initial scene
- The rising action
- The Climax
- The falling action
- The dénouement

Today’s Blog: The skill of using language comes from the ability to put together figures of speech that act as symbols in writing.
Short digression: back in the USA.
Here are my rules of writing:
- Entertain your readers.
- Don’t confuse your readers.
- Ground your readers in the writing.
- Don’t show (or tell) everything.
4a. Show what can be seen, heard, felt, smelled, and tasted on the stage of the novel.
- Immerse yourself in the world of your writing.
Creativity is the extrapolation of older ideas to form new ones or to present old ideas in a new form. It is a reflection of something new created with ties to the history, science, and logic (the intellect). Creativity requires consuming, thinking, and producing.
Here is the beginning of the scene development method from the outline:
- Scene input (comes from the previous scene output or is an initial scene)
- Write the scene setting (place, time, stuff, and characters)
- Imagine the output, creative elements, plot, telic flaw resolution (climax) and develop the tension and release.
- Write the scene using the output and creative elements to build the tension.
- Write the release
- Write the kicker
First step of writing—enjoy writing. Writing is a chore—especially if you don’t know what you are doing, and you don’t know where you are going. Let me help you with that.
How do we gain the skills to write well? Let’s begin with reading. Reading allows us to understand the following:
- What a novel is.
- How a novel is constructed.
- How a novel is entertaining.
- How a novel is written.
- How novels have evolved.
- Different genre in novels.
If we understand what makes a novel entertaining, we can move on to how a novel is written.
This idea incorporates significant concepts about writing. First of all, the author must be a skilled reader. Second, the author must be a skilled writer. Third, the author must have an idea. Forth, the author must have the discipline to write a novel.
Brainstorming, lists, dreams, daydreaming, life events, technology, setting, and plot outlining might produce ideas worth writing. How do we find an idea to write about?
You can write a novel based on a brainstormed idea from a list—let’s explore these ideas in all their parts. If you notice from the list above, all the words following brainstorming are examples of lists for brainstorming.
Daydreaming is just thinking. Most people don’t just think enough. You should get into the habit. If you are like me, you can’t sit still and just think. What I need to do is study a little—I’m a studier. I think you can find all different types of methods for thinking or aiding your thinking. Here’s my list:
- Studier – visual
- Music – aural
- Builder – touch
- Cook – smell and taste
Touch is really great, but don’t go overboard. I will assert that simply by touching, an author can implement study. Watch where your hands are. The reality is that most people aren’t studying at all when they are touching and an author surely should be. For example, before writing about walking on sand, stones, wood, in a wood, on pine needles, in a desert, and all, it would help to do each of these things. In bare feet is certainly a great idea before writing about walking in these places in bare feet.
How about just the feel of something? We kind of understand these experiences, but do we fully grasp them to the point where we can write them down.
In terms of music, I write about music in such a way to try to convey the musicality to my readers. In writing about the feel of items and experiences, I’d like to do the same thing. This is where euphemism and figures of speech come in.
You can’t ever directly convey anything aural or of touch to any reader. You can’t convey anything to do with the visual sense directly in writing. You must use figures of speech and euphemism—that is description to convey to the mind of your readers what you want them to experience.
Thus, you need to study feel and practice describing feel just like you should with music and visual description. If you like, try just that kind of exercise. Feel, listen, and look and then describe your experience in such a way that a reader can experience something similar. And, we haven’t even gotten to building yet.
